From Formula Ford and Formula 3 to Formula 2 and in 1983 Porsche works driver in the new Group C Porsche 956. Even with 35 years gone by the meteoric rise of Stefan Bellof is without parallel. His driving style, successes and record laps have become legendary. But it is not common knowledge that the talented German had had a first sports car experience a year before he entered the Rothmans Porsche works cockpit in 1983. He had given his sports car debut performance in a Kremer Porsche 936/82 at Hockenheim on August 29th in 1982 already.

The German Championship of 1982 was on the move from Group 5 to Group C which resulted in a colorful mixture of Gr. 5, Gr. 6 and new Group C cars at the grid of the Hockenheim Hessencup round. Rolf Stommelen had achieved four podium finishes earlier in the DRM season with Kremer's Porsche 936/82 chassis before it was re-designed in the colors of sponsor Meisterfoto for its final race at Hockenheim with Bellof at the wheel. While the Porsche retired Stefan Bellof started into a fantastic albeit much too short sports car career.

Porsche 962C GTi Richard Lloyd Liqui Moly winner Norisring WSPC 1987 Baldi/Palmer

reference number: 20-41609

Raceland Gold Edition made by Spark 1/43rd scale. Special limited edition of 300 pieces, individually numbered, special Raceland packaging. High quality resincast model car with photo etched parts 1/43rd scale. Model size approximately 10 cm.

After his own career as a racing driver Richard Lloyd founded RLR Richard Lloyd Racing also known as GTi Engineering in the World Sports Car Championship. Nigel Stroud had designed Lloyd's special 962C GTi in 1986 and the car differed from the standard Porsche 962C mainly via the separate rear wing, a more aggressive front nose and flap and the different head lamps. It is reported that a page in the TWR Jaguar design book inspired Nigel Stroud to cover the rear wheels completely mainly to improve the aerodynamic performance of the car.In 1987 the Nuremberg Norisring 200 Miles were part of the World Sports Car Championship for the very last time attracting all the works cars of Porsche, Jaguar and Sauber. Dr. Jonathan Palmer and Mauro Baldi qualified their 962C GTi 9th on the grid but the driver pairing did a fantastic job during the 2-hour battle and won the race after 354 kilometers. This triumph at 200 Miles of Nuremberg and a victory at the Kyalami round were the best result the special Porsche 962C GTi left in the WSPC history books.

BMW 320 Turbo Schnitzer Abel Lepitre 3° Div.2 DRM Norisring 1980 Walter Brun

Raceland Gold Edition made by Spark 1/43rd scale. Special limited edition of 300 pieces, individually numbered, special Raceland packaging. High quality resincast model car with photo etched parts 1/43rd scale. Model size approximately 10 cm.

Manufacturer ref. no.: RS1608

The German touring car championship run after liberal Group 5 regulations had more and more mutated into a silhouette prototype series by the end of 1979 and the 1980 Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft season saw another arms race in Division 2. The normally aspirated 2-litre cars were nearly humbled by the 1.4 litre turbos of the Gr. 5 BMW 320, Zakspeed Capri, Lancia Beta Montecarlo and Ford Escort. The supercharged BMW Turbo was said to deliver around 450 hp. In Formula 1 it would even be more than 1,000 hp a few years later.

Swiss businessman Walter Brun had succeeded in contracting his French sponsor for one more year. The French champagne dynasty of Abel Lepitre had promoted their products on BrunÛs BMW 320 and BMW M1 the year before already. With money from the Reims vineyards Walti Brun could afford one of the ultra-flat Schnitzer BMW 320 Turbo cars for 1980. Suddenly he was able to race among the works drivers and indeed managed three podium finishes that year, one of them being the Nuremberg 200 Miles at the Norisring.

Shadow DN5 Cosworth V8 UOP 4° German GP Nürburgring 1975 Tom Pryce

reference number: 20-41703

Tom Pryce was counted among the greatest natural talents of Formula racing in the 1970s. From Formula Ford and Formula 3 the quiet Welshman graduated to Formula 2 with the Motul Rondel Team for the 1973 season finishing 2nd at the Norisring. One year later he had his F1 debut for Token at the Belgian GP at Nivelles before Don Nichols contracted him for his Shadow Team to replace Peter Revson in 1974. When the new Shadow DN5 was ready in March of 1975 Tom Pryce could prove his talent at last, his pole position at Silverstone being one example.

The German Grand Prix that year was held at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife which had become too fast for F1. Niki LaudaÛs 6:58.6 fastest qualifying lap had raised additional arguments on the trackÛs safety. With unusually high temperatures the Green Hell promised a cruel battle when the GP was started on August 3rd. 16th on the grid Tom Pryce fought his way to 4th although he was burnt by leaking hot oil in the cockpit. So a night in hospital delayed the party. Pryce stayed with Shadow. He was killed at Kyalami in 1977.

Swiss Walter Brun had great expectations for the 1986 World Sports-Prototype Championship. For his ambitious goal he acquired two brand new 962C Group C cars from the Porsche factory - chassis numbers 117 and 115. In Memorex colors 962.115 had its debut at the Nürburgring Supercup race in April driven by Frank Jelinski. Redesigned in Fortuna livery for the Le Mans 24 Hours early in June the car finished a sensational 2nd with Oscar Larrauri, Jésus Pareja and Joel Gouhier only beaten by the works Rothmans Porsche of Stuck, Bell and Holbert.

Just four weeks later the car was back in Memorex outfit for the Norisring race. Shortened to a 100 mile distance the traditional 200 Miles of Nuremberg for the first time were part of the WSPC in 1986. After years with Günter Gebhardt's C2 cars young German Frank Jelinski had proceeded to Group C1 and made big impression on the world's sportscar elite. Finishing 4th behind a Blaupunkt Porsche and two works Jaguar XJR-6 was a top result for Jelinski and an essential contribution to Walter Brun's team WSPC title in 1986.

Porsche 962C Valvoline Jim Beam SAT1 Supercup Norisring 1989 Walter Lechner

reference number: 20-41404

Austrian Walter Lechner's Racing School had been the elite training ground for young racing talents such as Stefan Bellof or Karl Wendlinger who even managed to proceed to Formula 1. But Walter Lechner sr. was a devoted and successful sports car racer himself as well. With support from the Jim Beam Whiskey distillery and the well-known Austrian exhaust specialists of Sebring Exhausts he entered a Porsche 962C for the 1989 ADAC SAT1 Supercup season run in Germany with an additional race at Silverstone where Lechner finished 3rd. The Norisring asked for a different set up so the team changed the front of the car using additional flaps on both sides and - curiously enough - forgot to install the left headlight. Before his career as a redoubtable team owner in the German Rennsport Meisterschaft German real estate millionaire Georg Loos was a successful racing driver himself. In 1971 he entered his Ferrari 512M in the Interserie Championship but soon acquired a more powerful McLaren M8F with 8-litre V8 Chevy engine for 1971 and 1972. For the 1973 season he bought a brand new Porsche 917/10 Turbo.

This chassis # 017 was equipped with the 5-litre 180° V12 turbocharged Porsche engine providing 1100 hp and more. It was a ride on the cannonball on a short circuit as the Norisring with lap times down to 52 seconds! It was the last attendance of these spectacular cars at the German city street circuit. Georg Loos finished second behind Leo Kinnunen in a similar Porsche 917/10 Turbo car.

Porsche 917 Spyder Olden Kott Interseries Norisring 1971 Leo Kinnunen

reference number: 20-41203

The mighty big bangers of Porsche, Ferrari, Lola and McLaren promised a fantastic race at the Norisring, round 4 of the popular Interserie in 1971. The long straights of this circuit were a fantastic scenery to display the power of these 5-litre, 7-litre and 8-litre monsters. But instead the race became the black-letter day in the history of the street circuit when Pedro Rodriguez crashed heavily into a concrete barrier. Leo Kinnunen missed the tumbling and burning Ferrari 512 wreckage only just, stopped and climbed out of his car to help his 1970 Porsche team mate. But there was no rescue for the popular Mexican. Leo Kinnunen did not start for the second heat but still became a deserved Interserie Champion in 1971.

Lola T222 Chevrolet Interserie 3° 200 Miles of Nuremberg Norisring 1971 Joakim Bonnier

reference number: 20-41106

From 1970 the Interserie became the European equivalent of the American Can Am Series. Swedish Formula 1 and sports car driver Joakim Bonnier had become the official Lola distributor and entered one of three Lola T222 into the 1971 season. The 800 hp Chevy 8.3 litre engine was well competitive against the strong McLaren and Porsche 917. Only for the highlight of the year at the Norisring Bonnier insisted to race the Lola T222 himself. A third place behind the McLaren M8E of Christ Craft and Peter Gethin was a fine result but after the fatal accident of Pedro Rodriguez nobody was in a mood for a celebration. Jo Bonnier himself lost his life just one year later at the 1972 Le Mans 24 Hours in a Lola T280.

Porsche 908/3 Turbo Gr.6 Brunn Racing 6° DRM Norisring 1983 Jochen Dauer

reference number: 20-41408

Raceland Gold Edition made by Spark 1/43rd scale. Special limited edition of only 300 pieces, individually numbered, special Raceland Gold Edition packaging. High quality resincast model car with photo etched parts 1/43rd scale. Model size approximately 10 cm.

For young Franconian racer Jochen Dauer the Nuremberg Norisring was the closest race track nearby and a very good chance to acquire regional sponsorship for the yearly 200 Mile Race in front of the big crowds. Between 1977 and 1981 he had been there already with private entries of BMW and Ford touring cars for the German Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft. But in 1983 he stepped into sportscar racing in the cockpit of Dr. Siegfried BrunnÛs Porsche 908/3 Turbo. It was the same car Brunn Racing had entered the year before with John Paul jr. who had finished sixth.

In 1983 the Group 6 sportscars fell behind the new Group C constructions so Brunn Racing fitted a new 2.6 litre turbo engine to chassis #011 to keep in touch. The debut race at Brands Hatch was promising when Derek Bell and team owner Siegfried Brunn won the Easter Monday Thundersports race. Competition at the Norisring 200 Miles was much stronger, though, with Gr. C entries like Porsche 956, 936C and Sehcar C6. Jochen Dauer finished in 6th place, a fine result for the fastest Gr. 6 car on the track.
