It was little short of a miracle that the 200 Miles of Nuremberg 1972 at the Norisring took place at all as round 6 of the popular Interseries - the European equivalent of the Can Am series. After the fatal accident of Pedro Rodriguez the year before the traditional race stood on the brink. But race director Gernot Leistner and his team managed to get the 1000 hp monsters back to the city circuit that had been shortened to cut top speeds. Kinnunen and Kauhsen in their Porsche 917/10 turbos were favourites but two 8-litre McLaren M8F were faster in qualifying.

With lap times only just above 51 seconds Leo Kinnunen, Willi Kauhsen, Helmut Kelleners, Teddy Pilette or Howden Ganley made the 60,000 spectators jump from their seats. More than 45 years ago this battle of the giants with 8-litre aspirated Chevy V8 versus Porsche's 5-litre 1000 hp turbocharged monsters was a show from another planet! Willi Kauhsen whose Porsche 917/10 TC was entered with the older front design finished second in both heats only beaten by Finn Leo Kinnunen in his brand new Porsche 917/10.

BMW 320 Turbo Sachs Sporting winner Norisring Div. 2 1978 DRM-Champion Harald Ertl

1978 was the second year German touring car series Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft raced after Group 5 regulations. It soon became apparent that a turbo charged engine was needed in small Division 2 as well to be a front runner. After a disappointing 1977 Formula 1 season with Hesketh Harald Ertl just did a few F1 races for Ensign in 1978 to fully concentrate on touring car racing. From the very beginning Schnitzer's new 1.4 liter BMW turbo engine proved fast and reliable which enabled Austrian-born Ertl to collect victories and top 5 results in a row.

Schnitzer had pushed the small engine to around 400 hp at 9,400 rpm that made Zakspeed's Ford Escorts look old with their 2-liter aspirated engines. Ford's own turbo engine came too late in 1978. In-house BMW turbo competition was still struggling with teething problems so Harald Ertl's 5th season victory at the Norisring brought him an overall lead after Toine Hezemans and the Gelo Porsche 935 had suffered two DNF results in division 1. Second on the podium at the Nürburgring final made Ertl DRM champion of 1978.

Nicknamed "Mr. Porsche" Wuppertal privateer Edgar Dören had been a fixture in the German Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft since 1971 and remained true to Porsche for decades. With the support of the tool brands Weralit and Elora a dream came true for him in 1980 when he acquired a Porsche 935 K3 to race the German DRM championship and several rounds of the World Championship for Makes that year. Two podium finishes at the Mainz-Finthen and Zolder DRM rounds were the highlights for the colourful Weralit car in 1980.

Between 1980 and 1982 this Porsche 935 K3 chassis #009 0003 was a regular starter in national and international events with Edgar Dören and e.g. team mate Jürgen Lässig and also raced the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1981. In a late career #009 was used by John Greasley to mix up the 1993 British GT Championship. Dören continued endurance racing with Porsche in VLN at the Nürburgring Nordschleife for 22 years and won the Nürburgring 24 Hours of 1988. He died in 2004 just a few days ahead of another season.

Reigning DRM Champion Hans Heyer continued with Zakspeed Ford for 1977 to defend his title in a brand new division 2 wide body Group 5 Ford Escort II RS. But that year opposition in the 2-litre class had grown deliberately with the arrival of Jochen Neerpasch's BMW Junior Team where Marc Surer, Eddie Cheever and Manfred Winkelhock had been contracted to race the works BMW 320. With 275 hp the Zakspeed Ford Escort lacked around 20 hp against the BMW but experienced and shrewd Heyer pushed his new Group 5 car to the ultimate limits.

The fight Zakspeed Ford vs. BMW, Heyer vs. the BMW Junior Team armada saw its inglorious culmination at the Norisring where the division 2 cars converted the South German city circuit into a battlefield. Surer and Cheever attacked the Ford Escort so heavily in the race that poor Heyer's car was literally torn to shreds. After numerous collisions and spins Hans Heyer still finished 4th with his totally tattered Mampe Escort. Until today the Norisring race of 1977 is regarded as the most scandalous German touring car race of all times.

Honda RA301 V12 F1 German GP 1968 John Surtees

reference number: 20-41704

Raceland Gold Edition made by Spark 1/43rd scale. Special limited edition of 300 pieces, individually numbered, special Raceland packaging. High quality resincast model car with photo etched parts 1/43rd scale. Model size approximately 10 cm.

Manufacturer ref. no.: RS1704

EAN 9580006532381

The German Grand Prix of 1968 held at the 23 km long Nordschleife of the Nürburgring on August 4th is regarded as the Formula 1 GP raced at the worst weather conditions of F1 history ever. Continuous rainfall and misty conditions had not restrained 250,000 spectators to travel to the Eifel track but for the drivers this race must have been plain hell. 13 times per lap the fragile cars took off with all four wheels and the long Döttinger Höhe straight was densely covered with puddles and a torrent of rain with the danger of aquaplaning at top speeds of up to 290 kph.

Honda's 1968 F1 season had been a disaster so far. Their RA301 with its V12 engine was simply too heavy and their new light RA302 prototype was destroyed just four weeks earlier at Rouen when Jo Schlesser lost his life. Of all races it had been this tragic French Grand Prix when John Surtees had finished 2nd as the best result of the year. From 3rd row on the grid next to later winner Jackie Stewart Surtees was not so lucky at the Nürburgring where the ignition failed early in the race. At the end of 1968 Honda withdrew from Formula 1.

Brabham BT42 Cosworth V8 F1 Austrian GP 1974 Helmuth Koinigg

reference number: 20-41708

Raceland Gold Edition made by Spark 1/43rd scale. Special limited edition of 300 pieces, individually numbered, special Raceland packaging. High quality resincast model car with photo etched parts 1/43rd scale. Model size approximately 10 cm.

Manufacturer ref. no.: RS1708

Vienna born Helmuth Koinigg had started his motor racing career in 1969 with an ex Niki Lauda Mini Cooper S before joining Helmut Marko and the McNamara Team to follow the path of most young Austrian talents into a wild and crazy Formula Vee. Despite his success in Formula Vee, Formula Ford and F3 he never managed to raise the funds for a Formula 2 season not to mention his dream of Formula 1. Meanwhile he followed the call of Ford Cologne to race their Capri and Escort and in 1974 he even joined Martini Porsche for the Le Mans 24 Hours.

The money earned with Ford and Porsche plus the support of the Vienna Casino at Baden made a dream come true: Helmuth Koinigg hired Scuderia Finotto's Brabham for his F1 home Grand Prix in Austria in August of 1974. Although he failed to qualify the outdated car for the race the door to Formula 1 seemed open as John Surtees offered him a drive for the final two races. What appeared as happy end was to end up in a cruel tragedy when the young Austrian was killed in the Watkins Glen final after a suspension failure.

From Formula Ford and Formula 3 to Formula 2 and in 1983 Porsche works driver in the new Group C Porsche 956. Even with 35 years gone by the meteoric rise of Stefan Bellof is without parallel. His driving style, successes and record laps have become legendary. But it is not common knowledge that the talented German had had a first sports car experience a year before he entered the Rothmans Porsche works cockpit in 1983. He had given his sports car debut performance in a Kremer Porsche 936/82 at Hockenheim on August 29th in 1982 already.

The German Championship of 1982 was on the move from Group 5 to Group C which resulted in a colorful mixture of Gr. 5, Gr. 6 and new Group C cars at the grid of the Hockenheim Hessencup round. Rolf Stommelen had achieved four podium finishes earlier in the DRM season with Kremer's Porsche 936/82 chassis before it was re-designed in the colors of sponsor Meisterfoto for its final race at Hockenheim with Bellof at the wheel. While the Porsche retired Stefan Bellof started into a fantastic albeit much too short sports car career.

After his own career as a racing driver Richard Lloyd founded RLR Richard Lloyd Racing also known as GTi Engineering in the World Sports Car Championship. Nigel Stroud had designed Lloyd's special 962C GTi in 1986 and the car differed from the standard Porsche 962C mainly via the separate rear wing, a more aggressive front nose and flap and the different head lamps. It is reported that a page in the TWR Jaguar design book inspired Nigel Stroud to cover the rear wheels completely mainly to improve the aerodynamic performance of the car.

In 1987 the Nuremberg Norisring 200 Miles were part of the World Sports Car Championship for the very last time attracting all the works cars of Porsche, Jaguar and Sauber. Dr. Jonathan Palmer and Mauro Baldi qualified their 962C GTi 9th on the grid but the driver pairing did a fantastic job during the 2-hour battle and won the race after 354 kilometers. This triumph at 200 Miles of Nuremberg and a victory at the Kyalami round were the best result the special Porsche 962C GTi left in the WSPC history books.

The German touring car championship run after liberal Group 5 regulations had more and more mutated into a silhouette prototype series by the end of 1979 and the 1980 Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft season saw another arms race in Division 2. The normally aspirated 2-litre cars were nearly humbled by the 1.4 litre turbos of the Gr. 5 BMW 320, Zakspeed Capri, Lancia Beta Montecarlo and Ford Escort. The supercharged BMW Turbo was said to deliver around 450 hp. In Formula 1 it would even be more than 1,000 hp a few years later.
Swiss businessman Walter Brun had succeeded in contracting his French sponsor for one more year. The French champagne dynasty of Abel Lepitre had promoted their products on BrunÛs BMW 320 and BMW M1 the year before already. With money from the Reims vineyards Walti Brun could afford one of the ultra-flat Schnitzer BMW 320 Turbo cars for 1980. Suddenly he was able to race among the works drivers and indeed managed three podium finishes that year, one of them being the Nuremberg 200 Miles at the Norisring.

Tom Pryce was counted among the greatest natural talents of Formula racing in the 1970s. From Formula Ford and Formula 3 the quiet Welshman graduated to Formula 2 with the Motul Rondel Team for the 1973 season finishing 2nd at the Norisring. One year later he had his F1 debut for Token at the Belgian GP at Nivelles before Don Nichols contracted him for his Shadow Team to replace Peter Revson in 1974. When the new Shadow DN5 was ready in March of 1975 Tom Pryce could prove his talent at last, his pole position at Silverstone being one example.
The German Grand Prix that year was held at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife which had become too fast for F1. Niki LaudaÛs 6:58.6 fastest qualifying lap had raised additional arguments on the trackÛs safety. With unusually high temperatures the Green Hell promised a cruel battle when the GP was started on August 3rd. 16th on the grid Tom Pryce fought his way to 4th although he was burnt by leaking hot oil in the cockpit. So a night in hospital delayed the party. Pryce stayed with Shadow. He was killed at Kyalami in 1977.
