Since the late 1960s Dieter Basche had been head of the BMW motorsport department. He was involved in the Munich manufacturerÛs F2 project of that time both as an engineer and a driver. When BMW retired from the European Formula 2 Championship after the 1970 season the complete knowledge and experience with the F2 M10 engine was transferred to the new BMW 2002 touring car. With the new established German DRM championship of 1972 the Division 2 offered a fantastic new scene for the 2-litre car against Ford Escort RS1600 and Porsche 914/6.

From the start of 1972 Dieter BascheÛs BMW 2002 was equipped with a mechanical Kugelfischer injection pushing the four-in-line to 225 HP. When the teething problems of the new system were over a first victory was due at round 4 at Diepholz. At the end of the season Basche and his BMW 2002 were first in Division 2 and 3rd overall behind two works Ford Capri RS2600 Div.1 cars. After his career as a driver the Bavarian went to Audi to become responsible for the development of the Rally Audi Sport Quattro and DTM V8 cars.
