The German Grand Prix of 1968 held at the 23 km long Nordschleife of the Nürburgring on August 4th is regarded as the Formula 1 GP raced at the worst weather conditions of F1 history ever. Continuous rainfall and misty conditions had not restrained 250,000 spectators to travel to the Eifel track but for the drivers this race must have been plain hell. 13 times per lap the fragile cars took off with all four wheels and the long Döttinger Höhe straight was densely covered with puddles and a torrent of rain with the danger of aquaplaning at top speeds of up to 290 kph.

Honda's 1968 F1 season had been a disaster so far. Their RA301 with its V12 engine was simply too heavy and their new light RA302 prototype was destroyed just four weeks earlier at Rouen when Jo Schlesser lost his life. Of all races it had been this tragic French Grand Prix when John Surtees had finished 2nd as the best result of the year. From 3rd row on the grid next to later winner Jackie Stewart Surtees was not so lucky at the Nürburgring where the ignition failed early in the race. At the end of 1968 Honda withdrew from Formula 1.
