The European Touring Car Championship of 1973 was dominated by the epic battle of the BMW 3.0 CSL Coupé with its 6-in-line engine against the V6 Ford Capri RS 2600. Both 3-litre engines delivered around 325 hp early in the season but the rivalry between the Munich BMW team and the team of Ford Cologne soon led to essential development of the Group 2 cars. For the German round at the Nürburgring BMW had homologated a spectacular new aero evolution and increased the capacity of their M52 engines to 3.3 and 3.5 litres. A quantum leap forward.

BMW's effective aerodynamics in combination with the new 375 hp engine made the Munich works cars favorites for the title all the more as they were supported by strong cars from Schnitzer and Alpina. Contracting current Formula 1 drivers like Chris Amon, Vittorio Brambilla, James Hunt or Niki Lauda for single races BMW left nothing to chance. First start of the new BMW works Coupés meant first victory, too. The Nürburging race even saw a triple win for the 3.0 CSL - the foundation for the 1973 ETCC title was laid.
