The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb - the race to the clouds - is a very special event in Colorado. The track of 19.99 km length with its 156 corners and rising 1.439 meters from start to finish had a complete gravel surface before 2001. In 1987 former German rally world champion Walter Röhrl mastered this crazy travel track in a record time of 10:47.58 minutes and was the first to beat the 11 minute barrier. This record is still valid today for front engined cars! The Audi Quattro S1 Pikes Peak he used was especially built for this event and produced 598 hp. The legendary German Olympia Rally of 1972 was a great rally event run in the year of the Munich Olympic Games with special stages throughout Germany.While the works Renault Alpine, Ford Escort RS and BMW 2002ti with Darniche, Mikkola or Warmbold were expected on top of the result lists surprisingly the unknown name of young Bavarian rally driver Walter Röhrl set the fastest time on the first stage at Mölln!

Impossible! This must have been a mistake of the time timekeepers! Probably a mistake by the minute..., so the unknown Bavarian was deleted from the top ranking with a minute added to his time.This quickly changed when Walter Röhrl permanently appeared amongst the top five in the next stages, so he was given back his time of the first stage, too.

When the rally came to Southern Germany the young Bavarian from Regensburg could no longer be stopped and set several fastest times on tarmac and gravel. Even he had to retire in the end with a broken engine the name Walter Röhrl had found its way into the rally scene.

This design tells the story of this famous first stage and the cancelled time given back later.
